Don Bradman - over hyped or is he the best?
one word - hype
Which teams? which players did he face?
He played in the era where a 2.6 bat was classed as WELL HEAVY.
If thats the case imagine the bowlers!?! no proper training, coaching, strength, no techniques..
Don in 2008, would get no where..
what do u lovely members think ?
ps. use videolinks, articles, etc etc to prove ur point if u so wish

Tendulkar wont get anywhere in 2040 will he... the game will have changed.
Bradman was the best player of his era no doubt!

Re: Don Bradman - over hyped or is he the best?
2040 ??? Leo talk about seeing the future!
of his ERA yeh i agree...but not the best EVER?
Bradman was ahead of everyone else at the time.. but since then theres more to batting then just hitting the ball with a wicket stump
I reckon Tendulkar in 1920's would have been AS successful or even more than DB.

Re: Don Bradman - over hyped or is he the best?
but Sachin has faced, LEE, McGrath, Tait (i think for one over!) and all these other speedo's.
I wonder what Larwoods bowling speed was.. any reference to it? i doubt it cus of no speed guns.
But yeh Larwood was one sicko inventor of fast bowling maybe?
but who else? Usually u aint a GREATEST EVER if u face one bowler over and over again.
ps. Keeper, dont u want to join in the cricket sim competition? u can be Duncan Fletcher and pick ur own squad.. should be a good competition once it gets started.

i was one of the first to join.
But in the bodyline series there was quite possibly 6 bouncers an over now it's what one above shoulder also you could have as many men behind square as you waqnt.

You can't compare Bradman, or anything from years past, and expect it to compete at the same level. Times change, technology moves on, the game has changed so you can't really expect him to compete now.

Re: Don Bradman - over hyped or is he the best?
yeah but i think he is the best. the bowlers back then were very good. they can be compared to now i concede but anybody who can bowl 6 bouncers at pace wherever they wanted all day must be good. and the way he batted on those sticky dogs was immpeccable. the only way they can be compared is stats. so when some one average over 99.94 after 80 inningsi will rate as the best.

Re: Don Bradman - over hyped or is he the best?
Og course Tendulkar would have been better than Bradman! People have evolved and are getting much fitter and using sophisticated training methods.
I rekon...if someone like gerraint jones went back in time he would be better than Bradman!

Re: Don Bradman - over hyped or is he the best?
Geraint Jones ? Leo ur taking the piss man! this is a serious conversation here!!!
Bowling six bouncers an over, cant be THAT hard.. all u do is pitch it short! and put fielders all around the bat.
With Sticky pitches, the ball would be slower off the track wouldnt it?
Anyways, any ideas or links to the SPEED of the bowlers in those days?

Re: Don Bradman - over hyped or is he the best?
What type of bat did Sir Don Bradman use? asked Quinten Scarbourah from Australia
For most of his career Don Bradman used bats made by the Yorkshire firm William Sykes, who started manufacturing the "Don Bradman Autograph" bat in 1930. The Sykes company was taken over by Slazenger during the Second World War, and the new owners continued making the Bradman Autograph model until around 1950. By coincidence the first new bat Bradman ever owned - a present from his parents after he made a triple-century in a club game - was also a Sykes, bought at the Mick Simmons shop in Sydney where he was later to work.

Re: Don Bradman - over hyped or is he the best?
My god do any of you know what you are saying?
This is what both have to contend with.
Bradman:
1) Pitches uncovered cracked and very poorly Kept
2) Fields not the best bumpy and slow not to mention bigger boundaries
3) Bowlers allowed to bowl as many bounces as you want on decks with variable bounce
4) What protective equiptment?
5) Bats are poor at best. No weight and no ping
6) No third Ump
7) Had to verse the best teams and never Bangledesh Zimbabwe or Holland!!
Bradman an average of 99.94 in the worst conditions imaginable.
Tendulker:
1) Pitches Manicured as flat as a tack and easy for batting
2) Brilliant and quick and small
3) Bowlers allowed 1 an over and must bowl full on flat decks
4) Protective equipment so padded and you wont get hurt
5) Bats made like beasts. See leading edges go for 6
6) Third umps to look at everything
7) Gets to belt "2nd Class attacks" of the minows around
An average of max 55 on the most batsman fieldly pitches in history
How the hell can you say that Bradman is not the best?

Harwood was about 90+ MPH with bradman with no protective gear

They did wear protection Nozz, although it was more than likely ineffective. And it's LarwoodNozza wrote:Harwood was about 90+ MPH with bradman with no protective gear

Impossible to say who is/was better, both from different eras and both were affected by different bowlers, conditions etc
