Spin - Flight
You often hear commentators speak of batsmen bing "done in the flight"
But how does everyone feel wehn a spinner bowls a flighted delivery at them?
Do you all look to smack it?
And from a bowlers point of view...With the extra flight how do you get it to drop?...(you also hear a lot mentioned about th bally dipping under the bat etc..)?
Just Curious

Re: Spin - Flight
if the spiner flights it to me i will allways look to hit it away. but if they pitch it short and they flight it i will not have a go at it, because it will spin most of the time and knowing me i will come down the wicket and get stuped.
Re: Spin - Flight
I think when you are facing a good spinner, and you are getting tied down, you have to try and make use of flighted ball because it gives you a chance to get down the wicket.

Re: Spin - Flight
yeah but if there just a poor spinner who does not spin the ball then theres not that much risk in coming down the wicket
Re: Spin - Flight
if it's flighted i either get back and fill it or push forward and try to get runs.

Re: Spin - Flight
i think keeper meant (correct me if i'm wong)
At that age bowlers don't need to know how to flight the ball, yet some still manage to get the flight and dip!

Re: Spin - Flight
its about the bowlers confidence too.. fighted ball will be just short of a fullish toss making the batter drive at it
so unless its a suprise or rare delivery, batsmen will be looking to hit a boundary off it, maybe even move forward so its a fulltoss

Re: Spin - Flight
Ok... Thats the batsmens perspective...
But how do you actually bowl the delivery?
What does the bowler have to do differently from a standard spinning delivery to generate the dip?
Obviously the flight is just tossing it up a bit... But at a standard pace etc the batsmen would have hours to get into position!
How as a bowler do you manage to get it to dip?!?!

Re: Spin - Flight
for my off spin i have not got my dip spot on at the moment but i really want to learn how to. any one got this dip sorted?
Re: Spin - Flight
i use my fingers to generate forward rotation on the ball so eventually it will dip and when bounces speeds up.
You have to release it so the ball goes above the eyelevel of the batsmen to get best effect.
Or you can do wot Afridi does and throw in a 70mph full toss and get the batsmen to play all round it or rush his shot

Re: Spin - Flight
there about 8 people i know that can flight a ball in my under 13 experiences. i reckon theres a few factors in getting the dip. but what ive found if your goign for a mix of drift and dip. try and get the balls seam on the 45 degreee angle. if you want absolute drift get as much angle on it as possible and the least amount possible for maximum bounce. warnie also says the follow thru is crucial to because just stopping after you ball gets no drift, dip etc.

Re: Spin - Flight
As Sameer said, I think it has got something to do with top spin, because if any of you play tennis, if you put top spin on the ball it dips.
